In the scene where a zombie crawls up a hill with a bird on its back, the actor wore non-toxic makeup and clothing which wouldn’t affect the crow. Prior to shooting, the crow’s trainer brought him in a box to set, took him out, and placed it on actor’s back. On action, the actor crawled twenty feet while the bird flapped his wings. On cut, the trainer placed the bird back in his carrier.
When we see the zombie eating worms, the actor was actually eating fake, edible worms.

In the same sequence when the actors open the door of a room revealing a zombie tied upside down to a ceiling, while a bird pecks at him, the actors open the door and two birds fly out the door, the scene was filmed in several shots. Prior to shooting the trainers brought several birds to set. The stuntman was already on set, hung up by his feet. When ready the trainer placed the raven on the arm of the stuntman who was hanging upside down. They also placed food on his arm and the raven immediately started to eat the food. After they called cut, they prepped the scene with the actors opening the door and the ravens flying out. First, the trainer had two birds in their boxes on set. He took them out and placed them on their marks. Another trainer stood outside the door. On action, the trainer released the birds who flew to the other trainer standing off camera.
In the scene where the actress walks down train tracks towards an abandoned train and two rats scurry past her feet, prior to filming several rats were carried to the set by the handlers using a crate. The trainer placed a bait box containing a buzzer and food outside the carriage on a platform. On action, the handler released the rats from the transport box, while another trainer activated buzzer in the bait box. The rats ran across the set to the bait box. Once all the rats were in the bait box the trainer closed the door on it.

On action, the actors jogged near deer as zombies. After they wrapped the live deer, they filmed a zombie eating a fake deer. He was actually eating plant based food from a fake animatronic deer.
There were other scenes with chickens, goats and dogs in the village. Those scenes were filmed in similar fashion as the ones mentioned above.
