There is a long sequence where Jason Segel is being chased by a guard dog throughout different parts of a mansion. In the first part of the sequence, the actor is going through a sock drawer when the dog enters the room growls and runs after him. This was essentially an A-B-A. One trainer released the dog from his A-mark, and he entered a room to hit his B-mark with the second trainer. The first trainer then called the dog back to his A-mark. Meanwhile, an actor was present in the room and ran out when the dog ran in, making it look like the dog was chasing the man out of the room.

When the actor runs through the kitchen and the billiard room with the dog running behind him, the actor was given the dog’s squeaky toy to run with. As he ran with the toy, the dog playfully ran after him.

The dog was first cued to enter the room and then give looks up towards a ladder. A stuntman held his leg out close enough for the dog to grab, and the dog did a pant leg and pulled the stunt man off the ladder. In the same scene when the actor hits the dog with the book, the actor/stuntman (depending on the shot) was lying on the ground while the dog was positioned on top, and grabbed the dog’s collar and “wrestled” with him. This was done slowly, carefully, with the guidance of the trainers, and with lots of treats and praise to keep things positive for the dog. A prop book was positioned nearby. The book was a constructed prop and was very lightweight. It was slowly brought to the dog’s head by the actor (with editing etc. will probably appear as if the dog was hit hard and knocked out). Some wrestling shots and apparently any shots of the dog actually knocked out were done with a stuffy.

In the scene where the dog jumps on the treadmill which launches him against the wall, the treadmill was not turned on. The dog was released from his A-mark and called around a corner to his B-mark on the treadmill. Any remaining work is CGI or stuffy

In the scene where the dog opens the door handle with his mouth, the actor was positioned outside the door, and the dog was cued to pull on the doorknob. The doorknob was a rubber replacement specially made for the dog (the dog had the opportunity to prep with it as well). The dog was cued to put the doorknob in his mouth and pull on it, giving the effect that he was trying to open the door to get towards the man on the balcony.

In the scene in the offices when the guard enters with a dog on a leash, Trainer walks dog onto set, the dog sits. Trainer squeaks toy to keep eye-line towards camera.
