Sharon is a woman who by day works at a monotonous job as a telephone information operator. Her evenings are spent with sleazy men seeking out other couples for the purpose of engaging in sexual orgies. She's depressed with the emptiness of her life and searches for something meaningful. One day religious fundamentalists knock on her door and leave a Bible with her and she begins to read it. After another sordid sexual tryst in a seedy motel, she contemplates suicide but instead begins reading from the bedside Bible. This time she finds God and begins to spread "The Word" to all she meets. With a fresh start on life, Sharon marries and has a daughter. All is well until several years later when her husband and several others are shot to death at work by a distraught former employee. Her faith in God unshaken, she takes her young daughter to a remote location where they await the end of the world when they will meet God. What they meet is tragedy.
